There are places where autumn is more than a season. It is an experience shaped by the colours of the woods, the scents of the land and traditions that continue to bring communities together. Civitella Licinio, a hamlet of Cusano Mutri nestled in the Matese landscape, is one of those places.
From 23 to 25 October and from 30 October to 1 November 2026, the village welcomes the 40th edition of its Chestnut Festival, an event that has celebrated one of autumn's most distinctive local products and its cultural significance for four decades.
Forty years mark an important milestone for a festival that has become an opportunity for people to reconnect and keep their relationship with the land alive. Chestnuts tell a story that goes far beyond food: a story of woodland landscapes, families and knowledge passed down through generations.
Organised by the Pro Loco of Civitella Licinio, the festival celebrates a heritage of traditions, landscapes and local identity. What makes the occasion special is not simply the flavour of chestnuts, but the chance to discover a community that continues to value its roots.
The festival also holds UNPLI's "Sagra di Qualità" recognition, awarded to events that promote traditional local products and the cultural heritage of their communities.
Surrounded by the warm colours of the chestnut woods and the atmosphere of the Matese villages, this fortieth edition invites visitors to rediscover the simple pleasures of autumn and explore an authentic side of the Sannio region.
