Some villages do not need to invent a setting, because the stage is already there: in the stones, alleys, arches and stories suspended between one generation and the next. Arpaia is one of these places: a village whose historic centre still preserves the echo of its ancient Lombard citadel and which, with AnticaMente 2026, chooses to turn memory into a shared story. Organised by Officina Sociale Pro Arpaia APS with the moral patronage of the Province of Benevento, the event takes place from July 3 to 5 as a widespread re-enactment, involving the village not simply as a backdrop, but as a true protagonist. The name itself suggests a double movement: looking back to the ancient past, while doing so with a living mind, bringing gestures, sounds and knowledge back into the present before they remain locked only in memory. The promotional materials highlight several deeply identity-based elements: ancient games, village crafts, old-time flavours, widespread theatre, folk dances and the Arpaia serenade, described as a song that has echoed through the alleys for generations. This is the strength of the event: it does not recreate the past like a postcard, but lets it walk among people again. The Palazzotto, mentioned in official previews as a narrative and performative space, becomes one of the symbolic places of the 2026 edition, while the streets of the historic centre invite visitors into a slow experience made of encounters, music, traditions and details to observe. AnticaMente is not just a village festival: it is a small laboratory of cultural tourism, where the community stages itself and invites visitors to enter a different kind of time — more handcrafted, more oral, more human. In a summer that often moves too fast, Arpaia chooses to slow down and remind us that the future of villages also passes through this: the ability to make their roots feel alive.
