The Hortus Conclusus is one of Benevento’s most recognisable and unexpected places: a closed garden, yet not cut off from the world; intimate, yet full of signs. Set within the former garden of the Convent of San Domenico and accessible from Vico Noce, it was created in 1992 through the intervention of Mimmo Paladino, the Sannio-born artist and one of the leading figures of the Transavanguardia. The Latin name evokes the medieval idea of the protected garden, a space of contemplation, symbol and inner stillness; here, however, that suggestion meets the language of contemporary art. Visitors enter a suspended route where stylised horses, helmets, masks, archaic figures and monumental presences converse with climbing plants, ancient stones and surviving walls. It is not an open-air museum in the usual sense: it is a total artwork, where nature is not a background but part of the narrative. The plant species are not accidental: the garden is built around a strongly symbolic botanical heart, in which each plant and tree is chosen also for the meaning it carries. The Hortus thus becomes a threshold between eras and languages: medieval in form, contemporary in imagination, Sannio in spirit. It is crossed slowly, almost in silence, allowing details to reveal themselves one by one. It is a place for art lovers, certainly, but also for those seeking a pause capable of raising questions: what remains of memory when it becomes form? What happens when a city entrusts beauty with one of its most hidden corners?
