Some stories are meant to be read.
Others are meant to be lived.
Janara Experience was created with exactly this purpose: to transform one of the Sannio's most fascinating legends into an immersive journey where history, theatre, emotion and memory come together.
On 25 and 26 July, the remarkable Archaeological Area of the Arco del Sacramento becomes a place where the boundary between reality and legend begins to fade. Surrounded by the ancient remains of Roman Benevento and the timeless atmosphere of the nearby Triggio, the city's oldest medieval district, visitors are invited to embark on a unique sensory and narrative experience inspired by one of Southern Italy's most captivating traditions.
The Janare, the legendary women who have become the symbol of Benevento, are presented through a compelling combination of storytelling and live performance. More than mythical witches, they emerge as complex figures deeply rooted in local history, popular beliefs and centuries of cultural identity.
One of the highlights of the experience is "The Trial of a Witch – The Bonfire of Innocence", a theatrical performance presented by I MattAttori Theatre Company. Through an engaging and thought-provoking production, the audience is taken back to the dark era of witch trials, exploring fear, superstition and prejudice while reflecting on how ignorance has too often transformed diversity into guilt.
Throughout the evening, every corner of the Arco del Sacramento becomes part of the story. Carefully designed lighting, theatrical settings, performers and immersive scenography transform this extraordinary archaeological site into a living stage where visitors are no longer spectators, but active participants in the legend.
Janara Experience is much more than a performance.
It is an invitation to discover Benevento through its most iconic story, walking between history and legend in one of the city's most evocative settings. Because here, perhaps more than anywhere else, mystery is not simply remembered—it is still alive.
