Some museums preserve works of art.

Others preserve stories, aromas and traditions that tell the identity of an entire city.

The Strega Museum, located inside the historic Strega Alberti factory in Benevento, is one of those special places. It is here, where the famous Strega Liqueur has been produced since 1860, that visitors embark on a journey through more than 160 years of history, craftsmanship and innovation.

The experience begins in the Herbalist's Room, where visitors can discover the aromatic herbs and spices that give the liqueur its unmistakable flavour and fragrance. Among the highlights is the historic wooden cabinet that safeguards the secret recipe, alongside the original tools once used during production.

The tour continues through the old distillery, where the historic swan-neck stills are still used today, before leading visitors into the atmospheric ageing cellar, where the liqueur rests in oak vats for at least six months.

One of the museum's most fascinating sections is the Hall of Imitations, displaying more than 400 counterfeit bottlescollected from around the world. It is a remarkable testament to the international success and recognition of the Strega brand.

The final stop is dedicated to the Premio Strega, Italy's most prestigious literary award. Historic photographs, covers of the winning books and the original blackboard used for more than seventy years to announce the winner at Villa Giulia reveal the deep connection between Benevento and one of the country's most celebrated cultural institutions.

A visit to the Strega Museum is much more than discovering the history of a famous liqueur. It is an opportunity to explore the story of a company that has become an international symbol while remaining deeply rooted in the city where it all began.
