Premio Strega 2026

The Premio Strega and Benevento share a story that spans almost eighty years. Founded in 1947 through the meeting of Maria and Goffredo Bellonci and Benevento entrepreneur Guido Alberti, owner of the historic company producing Strega liqueur, Italy’s most prestigious literary prize still maintains a deep connection with the city of Benevento.
On June 3rd, 2026, the magnificent Roman Theatre hosted the traditional first voting ceremony, one of the most anticipated events in the Italian cultural calendar. This year’s edition held special significance as it marked the eightieth anniversary of the Premio Strega, celebrated under the theme “Quasi una vita” (“Almost a Lifetime”).
During the evening, the six finalists who will compete in the July final in Rome were announced. Michele Mari led the ranking with “I convitati di pietra”, followed by Matteo Nucci, Bianca Pitzorno, Teresa Ciabatti, Alcide Pierantozzi and Elena Rui. Rui’s inclusion transformed the traditional shortlist of five into a final group of six, ensuring the presence of an independent publishing house among the contenders.
Surrounded by the timeless charm of the Roman Theatre and the unique atmosphere of a city that helped give birth to the Premio Strega itself, Benevento once again confirmed its role as a cultural landmark, welcoming writers, publishers, journalists and literature lovers from across Italy.
