Rocca dei Rettori

At the highest point of Benevento’s historic center stands the Rocca dei Rettori, a city landmark that weaves together centuries of history, art, and power. The complex is composed of two main elements: the Lombard Tower, about 28 meters high, and the Palace of the Papal Governors, built in the 14th century as the official residence of papal representatives. The Rocca rises on a site once occupied by Samnite necropolises, Roman baths, and later a Benedictine monastery. After the earthquake of 1702, the building was transformed and adapted for new purposes. Today, it houses the historical section of the Museo del Sannio, which contains key artifacts from local history, and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. Outside, the rear garden offers a stunning view of the city and features the Monument to the Lion, dedicated to Pope Urban VIII. Walking through its rooms is like traveling through time, where different eras blend seamlessly. The Rocca is not just a monument to visit, but a vibrant place where history and culture meet every day, offering visitors a rich and engaging experience.
