The Cicatiello Festival in Paupisi is much more than a gastronomic event: it is an institution that has been bringing history, flavours and traditions to the streets for over fifty years. Organised by the Pro Loco and the Municipality, it takes place every year at the end of August, transforming the village into a great stage for popular culture and conviviality.
The undisputed star of the show is cicatiello, fresh handmade pasta dried in the sun, prepared in large quantities by dozens of volunteers. This speciality, served with sauces ranging from classic ragù to sugo con pulejo, a wild mint typical of the area, is the symbol of an event that combines gastronomy and community pride.
Alongside the cuisine, Paupisi comes alive with street performances, concerts, performances, the evocative pyromusical show and the Cecatiello Dance, confirming the festival as one of the most beloved events in the Sannio area.
Curiosities:
- A spicy legend – According to tradition, cicatiello was born from the anger of a betrayed woman, who shaped the dough with her fingers, creating the typical cavity.
- A mark of excellence – The festival has been awarded national recognition as a “Sagra di Qualità” (Quality Festival) by UNPLI, a guarantee of authenticity and high cultural value.
- An extraordinary commitment – Every year, around 180 volunteers and over 80 master cavatori take part: a unique mobilisation for a small village.
