Some returns happen quietly. Others choose to make noise.
The story of SottoTraccia began when four young people decided to bring the knowledge and experience acquired beyond Sannio back to their home territory. Directors Carlo Pedata and Antonio Spina, curator Saverio Pepiciello and artistic director Piero Fallarino created a project dedicated to emerging creative energies that often remain outside the most visible cultural circuits.
From 25 to 30 August 2026, as part of the 47th Benevento Città Spettacolo festival, SottoTraccia returns with a second edition entitled “Rumore”, meaning “Noise”. Here, noise is understood not merely as a disturbance, but as a rupture capable of interrupting familiar patterns, raising questions and opening new avenues of research.
The festival will bring together around eighty artists, including approximately thirty connected with the local area and fifty arriving from elsewhere in Italy and abroad. They were selected from more than two hundred applications, demonstrating how quickly the project has expanded since its first edition.
Installations, contemporary dance, video art, experimental cinema, sound performances, theatre, music and talks will animate the spaces of Via Bartolomeo Camerario. The Auditorium San Nicola and several areas of the former Bosco Lucarelli building, now part of the Federico Torre school, will reopen to the public following a process of cleaning and recovery.
Regeneration is therefore more than an abstract idea. It means returning unused places to the community, filling them with people and demonstrating that even a forgotten space can once again generate relationships and imagination.
The festival’s research continues through “Cartografie del Rumore”, a publication created to collect reflections and new interpretations of contemporary culture. The project is further strengthened by exchanges with artists and researchers and by its relationships with Fondazione Donnaregina per le arti contemporanee – Museo Madre and Fondazione Morra.
SottoTraccia does not simply tell the story of what happens on a stage. It reveals what can happen when those who have left decide to return, make room for others and transform their own territory while continuing to look beyond its boundaries.
