In Benevento, the name Strega represents much more than a liqueur. It evokes a world of ancient legends, popular traditions and images that have helped make the city recognisable far beyond its borders.
The exhibition “Strega, dalla leggenda al mitico liquore”, hosted at Casa Pisani, explores this connection through a selection of rare postcards from Gianpaolo Bruno's collection. These graphic and photographic images tell the story of a product that became one of Benevento's most recognisable symbols.
The exhibition draws inspiration from the legend of the Janare, the witches traditionally associated with mysterious gatherings around the Walnut Tree of Benevento. It is from this world of folklore that the liqueur takes its name. Over time, Strega developed an identity of its own, becoming a symbol recognised far beyond Italy.
Originally presented by Antum Hotel at the end of May, during the Premio Strega semifinal held at the Roman Theatre, the exhibition has now been rearranged at Casa Pisani by Archeoclub Benevento.
The opening will feature a talk by Gianpaolo Bruno, who will guide visitors through the history and international spread of Strega liqueur using visual material from his collection.
An opportunity to rediscover how a product deeply rooted in local tradition can become part of a city's collective memory and cultural identity.
