Parco Regionale del Taburno-Camposauro

Established in 2002, the Taburno-Camposauro Regional Park covers about 12,370 hectares in the heart of Benevento province, dominated by the peaks of Mount Taburno (1,394 m) and Mount Camposauro (1,388 m). This limestone massif acts as a natural divide between the Telesina Valley and the Caudina Valley, and when viewed from the east, reveals an unmistakable silhouette: the “Sleeping Woman of the Sannio”.

The landscape alternates oak, hornbeam, and maple woods with vast beech forests above 900 meters, home to species such as the Apennine wolf, hares, and birds of prey. Among sinkholes and caves, trails lead to sacred sites like the Cave of Saint Simeon and the Hermitage of Saint Michael. In the area known as “Il Tesoro” (“The Treasure”), clay finds testify to a prehistoric settlement.

Beyond its natural wonders, the park preserves a living heritage of traditions: pastoral experiences like a day with a shepherd, and ancient festivities such as the Chestnut Festival, bring the surrounding villages to life, creating a deep connection between landscape and community.

Curiosities:

  • The Sleeping Woman of the Sannio – From afar, the mountain ridges take the shape of a reclining woman, a vision so striking it has fueled myths and folk tales for centuries.
  • Nature’s ancient “freezers” – Hidden among the woods are centuries-old nevère: deep stone pits once packed with snow and ice, treasures of survival long before refrigeration.
  • A prehistoric secret – In the area called Il Tesoro (“The Treasure”), archaeologists uncovered clay traces of prehistoric settlements, turning the park into a true open-air time machine.
  • The King’s footsteps – Trails such as the King’s Path and the Cave of Saint Simeon are not simple hikes, but journeys retracing pilgrimages, legends, and echoes of devotion.
