In the hilly landscape of Pesco Sannita, with the Sannio Apennines in the background, Zoo delle Maitine is one of the most surprising experiences in naturalistic and school tourism in Campania. Its value lies not only in the chance to observe species from different continents up close, but in the scientific vision behind the entire facility: not simply a recreational space, but a centre designed to educate visitors about biodiversity, conservation and respect for animals. Covering over four hectares and home to around 700 animals, the park organises its route through zoogeographical areas, guiding visitors on an ideal journey across Africa, America, Eurasia and Australia, with sections dedicated to savannah wildlife, Amazonian biodiversity, desert environments, primates, marsupials and domestic species in the Animal Farm. One of the most evocative spaces is the “Grave Mora” Flight Arena, where birds of prey are introduced through movement, observation and an understanding of their natural strategies. Education is one of the core elements of the project: schools can choose guided tours and workshops such as “Keeper for a Day”, which brings children and young people closer to the daily work of animal care and environmental enrichment, or “Friendly Monsters”, designed to introduce insects, reptiles and arachnids while overcoming fears and stereotypes. The park also takes part in conservation programmes and projects, from supporting lemur protection in Madagascar to monitoring the Nubian giraffe in Uganda, as well as raising awareness about Mediterranean reptiles. For Sannio, Zoo delle Maitine is therefore much more than a day trip: it is an open-air laboratory, able to bring together families, schools and local tourism around a simple and essential idea: knowing nature is the first step towards protecting it.
